Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 3 | January 19 – 12 | Joseph Smith—History 1:1-26

As a teenager, Joseph Smith had pondered for many days about God and heaven. He had never prayed out loud in his life, but when he chose to open his heart to the Lord, the answer he received changed the world.

We can speak to God every day through prayer. No matter how much or how little we say in our prayers, God wants us to talk with Him. Just like the young prophet, we can take our questions to God and know that He will answer us. We will learn as Joseph learned, that any “man who lacked wisdom might ask of God, and obtain” (Joseph Smith—History 1:26).

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

The lesson for this week is simplified but intentional to focus your thoughts and efforts on the Savior and His birth. We hope you take the time to use the activities provided to incorporate the light of Christ into your lives and into this special season

“I know the truth” game

Hands-On Activity

A lot of people were very mean to Joseph Smith after he told people he had seen a vision from God. It’s not always easy when we stand for truth, but Heavenly Father knew Joseph Smith was telling the truth, and so Joseph couldn’t deny it (JSH 1:25). Play the I Know the Truth Game with your family to help them practice telling the truth, even when others are telling them they’re wrong.

Prayer Pretzels

Go & Do Activity

Discuss how Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers, then read the legend of Prayer Pretzels and make some together with your family. Talk about what we do when we pray. You can pray in your heart, or pray out loud just like Joseph Smith did in the sacred grove. We can get answers to our prayers too.

Family Finger Puppets

Surprise Activity

Read Joseph Smith-History 1:1-5. Create the Joseph Smith’s Family Finger Puppets and House. Let children put the puppets on their fingers. Move the puppets from the Vermont house to the New York house. When reading each of Joseph’s family member’s names let the children hold up their puppet.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities

For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.

This week, we’ll be sharing the gospel with your little ones using the activity book in the Elementary Bundle. Be sure to use the activity book for younger children (Level 1, Recommended for ages 3-6). Print your activity book pages, then cut all of them in half, except the cover. You will fold the cover in half to help keep the pages together. Put all your pages in order inside the cover and then staple along the left-hand edge. Make one book for each of your children.

Prayer Sandwich

Hands-On Activity

Joseph Smith learned to pray as a child. Teach the steps of prayer by making a Prayer Sandwich. Cut out the ingredients. Teach that first, we address Heavenly Father. Then, we thank Him for our blessings. What are some things we can thank Him for? Write answers on the ingredients. Next, we ask for things we may need. What do we need? What does someone else need? Write the answers. Last, we end our prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Put the prayer sandwich together in order and staple. Reinforce this lesson by making a real sandwich together. YUM!

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“I Will Order All Things for Your Good”

Have you ever had a powerful spiritual experience and felt the joy of God’s love, only to feel down again when normal life resumes? Or an hour where your children were seemingly perfect and kind to one another, but the rest of the day was awful? This might have been how the early saints felt by the end of the year following the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Life itself didn’t get easier with the temple’s completion. Financial troubles and increased persecution made enduring to the end difficult for many saints. Yet those who persevered were blessed not only with strength but also with direction on how they could be a blessing to God’s children even amidst their own trials. The Lord’s comforting words to them are extended to us today as we also can help others feel loved during our own struggles: “Let thy heart be of good cheer before my face… for I, the Lord, have a great work for thee to do” (D&C 112:4,6).

“It Is Thy House, a Place of Thy Holiness”

March 27, 1836, was a special date both on earth and in heaven. For the first time since 70 AD, a temple of God was available for men and women to worship in. Many saints who were present for the dedication saw angels celebrating the return of temple blessings to the world. The Lord Jesus Christ shared His own joy of the temple’s completion in Doctrine and Covenants 110:6-7, when he said, “let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, built this house to my name. For behold, I have accepted this house…”.

“The Order of the Son of God”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized according to the Lord’s instructions, as detailed in this week’s reading in the Doctrine and Covenants. One of the ways we can apply the Lord’s guidance in these sections to our families is to establish councils within our homes. We should, with our children, “sit in council with them, and to teach them their duty, edifying one another” (D&C 107:85).
