It’s not uncommon to see the “war chapters” of the Book of Mormon as a lot of verses filled with battles and lacking spiritual significance. However, some of the strongest examples of faith and belief in Jesus Christ in the scriptures come from these ten chapters. Nowhere else is the consequence of wickedness and the fate of the righteous more apparent than in Alma 43-52.

Plant This Word in Your Hearts

The gospel of Jesus Christ is often in contrast with the doctrines of the world. The wicked Zoramites had abandoned the inspired word of God for their own interpretation, neglecting the principles of faith and repentance. Their hardened hearts were not receptive to Alma’s preaching, unlike the poor Zoramites who were eager to learn how the gospel could bring them peace.

They “Never Did Fall Away”

Change is a difficult process, but one that brings both immediate and eternbal rewards. The people taught by Ammon and his brethren were blessed by change and had their hearts filled with joy as their faith in Christ grew. A key decision in their efforts to change was to lay down their “weapons of… rebellion” (Alma 23:7). Doing so eliminated a practice that had kept them separated from the love and power of Jesus Christ.

A Mighty Change of Heart

Does it ever seem like you can’t get your kids to be nice to each other? Does doing the same thing over and over not make any difference? Alma found that as prophet, doing the same thing over and over wasn’t helping the people of Zarahemla repent. However, Alma realized that what his people needed wasn’t more lecturing. They needed a “mighty change” of heart (Alma 5: 14) as he did when he was a rebellious youth.

They Were Steadfast and Immovable

The age of the kings has ended with Mosiah as Alma the Younger becomes the first chief judge of the Nephites. Founded in the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the new Nephite government gets off on a rocky start with a civil war breaking out. Alma himself takes up the sword to defend his people, praying for peace as both prophet and military leader.
