Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 34 | August 18-24 | Doctrine and Covenants 89-92

The Word of Wisdom is an important revelation not because of the limitations we are given, but of the blessings we receive daily for keeping it. In addition to better health, we are promised to feel the Spirit in our lives and “shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:19).

What hidden treasures might be in our lives? For some, a hidden treasure might be the need for extra patience with children at the end of a long day. It might be a greater awareness of those around you in need. It might be a strengthening of your testimony of the Savior. As parents, we can help our children discover these “hidden treasures” by teaching them to live the Word of Wisdom.

This week’s Come Follow Me FHE lesson is full of fun activities that teach gospel principles from the scriptures. From games and snacks to puzzles and prayer, Come Follow Me FHE has all you need to keep kids enlightened and entertained. Start your free trial now!

I Pray In Faith

Scripture Study

We are taught that we can always pray to Heavenly Father for help or answers. Read D&C 90:24 and share how, as we pray always, we will have the faith to overcome anything in life. Listen to “I Pray In Faith” and learn the hand motions with the I Pray in Faith flipbook to help you learn the lyrics. Sing the song every night before your family prayer this week.

Hidden Treasures of Wisdom

Go & Do Activity

As we live healthy lives, we can receive many blessings and even hidden blessings. Read D&C 89:18-20 and discuss how we can find hidden treasures in our lives as we live righteously. Take turns hiding the hidden treasure boxes around the house or outside and share what blessings you receive as you follow The Word of Wisdom.

Commandments Help Me Be Happy

Go & Do Activity

Before the lesson, have your child help you prepare a healthy meal or snack. As you do so, discuss the importance of healthy foods and make sure we put things in our bodies that can help us feel good and grow strong. After the meal or snack, gather as a family and point out that as you ate, you were keeping the commandments! Reiterate that Heavenly Father gave us a commandment to help us keep our bodies healthy and strong. Teach that when our bodies feel good, it’s easier to feel the spirit and it’s easier to be happy. Read D&C 89:18-20, and discuss the blessings that come from keeping the Word of Wisdom. If you want, you could come up with actions for the blessings and have your child act out the verses. Remind them that Heavenly Father loves us and wants to bless us. He will bless us as we keep the commandments. Close by playing the Run And Not Be Weary game.

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“I Will Order All Things for Your Good”

Have you ever had a powerful spiritual experience and felt the joy of God’s love, only to feel down again when normal life resumes? Or an hour where your children were seemingly perfect and kind to one another, but the rest of the day was awful? This might have been how the early saints felt by the end of the year following the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Life itself didn’t get easier with the temple’s completion. Financial troubles and increased persecution made enduring to the end difficult for many saints. Yet those who persevered were blessed not only with strength but also with direction on how they could be a blessing to God’s children even amidst their own trials. The Lord’s comforting words to them are extended to us today as we also can help others feel loved during our own struggles: “Let thy heart be of good cheer before my face… for I, the Lord, have a great work for thee to do” (D&C 112:4,6).

“It Is Thy House, a Place of Thy Holiness”

March 27, 1836, was a special date both on earth and in heaven. For the first time since 70 AD, a temple of God was available for men and women to worship in. Many saints who were present for the dedication saw angels celebrating the return of temple blessings to the world. The Lord Jesus Christ shared His own joy of the temple’s completion in Doctrine and Covenants 110:6-7, when he said, “let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, built this house to my name. For behold, I have accepted this house…”.

“The Order of the Son of God”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized according to the Lord’s instructions, as detailed in this week’s reading in the Doctrine and Covenants. One of the ways we can apply the Lord’s guidance in these sections to our families is to establish councils within our homes. We should, with our children, “sit in council with them, and to teach them their duty, edifying one another” (D&C 107:85).
