Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 33 | August 11-17 | Doctrine and Covenants 88

Learning is a lifelong journey. While we tend to think of our years in school as the only time in life when we need to gain an education, we know through Doctrine and Covenants 88 that the Lord instructs His faithful to create places of learning in their own homes (D&C 88:119). How do we do that?

Turning our homes into houses of learning can start with daily prayer. From there, we can add personal and family scripture study. We can also strive to read and share what we read with our children to encourage them to “seek … out of the best books words of wisdom…”. Ultimately, we should invite the Holy Ghost into our lives to help us continually learn. When we do so, we truly “seek learning, even by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118).

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

Tally the Light

Scripture Study

Read D&C 88:6-13, 21-25 and 36-40. As you read the verses, keep a tally of how many times you hear/ read the word “light” and “law” by using the tally sheet. Then compare and the tallies you have under each word. Explain that by following the law of Christ we can receive more light. Talk about ways you’ve seen your children keep the law of Christ that helps keep the spirit in your home.

Love One Another

Go & Do Activity

Read D&C 88:123 and watch a video about loving one another. As you watch, look for examples of how each person is showing love to someone else. Make the Love One Another Paper Chain. Discuss how you and your family can show love to others.

A House of God

Hands-On Activity

Read D&C 88:119 and work to put together the seven different houses from the scripture in the order you read them. After they are all aligned, talk about each one and how you can add this “house” to your house. When finished, decide on one thing your family can work on together this week to build your house into a house of “prayer, fasting, faith, learning, glory, order, and God.”

I Can Love Everyone

Go & Do Activity

Cut a large heart out of paper. With your child, decorate the heart for someone. Talk about how giving the heart to them is a way for you to show love to them. Teach that Jesus taught us to love one another. Then, read D&C 88:123 and teach that we should show love to all people. Ask your child how they can show love to others and how they feel when someone else shows love to them. You could prompt them if they are struggling to come up with their own answers. You could also share your own examples of showing and feeling love. Then, with your child, play the Love One Another bean bag toss. You could also print pictures of family members for the game. Toss the bean bag onto a picture and share how you can show love to that person. Share your testimony that when we love one another, we feel Jesus’s love for us.

“Our Eyes Are upon Thee”

After many years of living separately, King Hezekiah of Judah invited the people of the Kingdom of Israel to come down to Jerusalem and worship the Lord during the Passover. Many who came to the temple did not remember all the cleansing ordinances and were not fully prepared to participate. Rather than scorn them, Hezekiah made sure that no one who attended Passover was left out: “The good Lord pardon every one that prepareth his heart to seek God” (2 Chronicles 30:18-19). Because of this, “there was great joy” during the Passover in Jerusalem as the people grew closer together in worship (2 Chronicles 30:26).

“He Trusted in the Lord God of Israel”

Josiah was a righteous king of Judah. He desired to bring the people back into their covenant relationship with the Lord, yet there was no way to remember the Law of Moses: the people had forgotten it. However, when ancient scripture texts were found in the temple, Josiah was able to remind his people of the law and blessings of their covenant. The people began to feel God’s presence again as worship of the Savior resumed “with all their heart and all their soul” (2 Kings 23:3).

“There Is a Prophet in Israel”

Miracles are a must-have in parenting. From remembering to take a few breaths when we discover marker all over the couch, to pleading for the health of our little ones when they’re sick, we need miracles every day. The stories of Elisha the Prophet remind us that the Lord is aware of the parent and their child at all times.
