Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 49 | December 1-7 | Doctrine and Covenants 137-138

“What happens after we die?” This is a question commonly asked by all of God’s children. Because of continuing revelation through living prophets, we know! Doctrine and Covenants Sections 137 and 138 reveal that our loved ones who have died go to a place of rest if they were faithful in their testimony of Christ, where they are then prepared to teach the gospel in the spirit world. Those who died who were not faithful are given the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ and accept ordinances performed by the living: “and thus was the gospel preached to the dead” (D&C 138:30).

Because of these revelations, we should find some comfort in knowing what happens after we die. The work of the Lord carries on past death and is still a great work in the spirit world. We can be a part of it if we choose to be faithful now.

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

Heavenly Books

Scripture Study

Read D&C 137 as a family. Try drawing the celestial kingdom as your reread D&C 137:1-6. After reading, share your drawings. Then make the Celestial Kingdom Booklet to help you study and review the things you learned. Share how you feel about your family being together forever in the celestial kingdom.

Family History Chart

Hands-On Activity

Read D&C 138:57 together. Talk about the spirit world and how this scripture teaches us that missionary work is happening there, as well as on Earth. Fill in a family history chart together. As you do, share a memory you have of a family member who you want to see again one day. Keep your family history chart up during the week and share more memories as opportunities come up.

Color Desires

Coloring Activity

Read D&C 137:9 and explain that the “desire of their hearts” means the decisions you make and what motivates you. Have your children color the Desire of Your Hearts coloring page as you talk about making good decisions.

Finger Puppet Fun

Hands-On Activity

Draw a happy face on a piece of paper. Ask your child to make a happy face by smiling. Ask what makes them feel happy. Draw a sad face on the paper. Ask your child to show you a sad face. Ask what makes them feel sad. Explain that we can have feelings. Sometimes, we are happy, sad, afraid, mad, or surprised. Read D&C 136:28-30. Heavenly Father has told us that when we are happy, we should praise God and be thankful. Discuss ways that we can do that. When we are sad, we can pray for comfort. When we are afraid, we can understand that Heavenly Father will help us. With your child, create the My Feelings Finger Puppets and do the activity.

“The Family Is Central to the Creator’s Plan”

Every family comes with their own set of trials and blessings. Parents and children alike have both memorable times together, as well as times in which forgiveness is needed to move forward in love and harmony. As the Proclamation teaches, Jesus Christ is the key to strengthening bonds and repairing relationships that break: “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Ultimately, all we do as a family in righteousness prepares us to live with God, exalted, as a family in heaven.

“We Believe”

Though we have reached the end of the Doctrine and Covenants, the work of the Restoration is still ongoing: “We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God” (Articles of Faith 1:9). Prophets still reveal the will of God. The Church is still growing to fill the Earth.
