Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 43 | October 20-26 | Doctrine and Covenants 121-123

The recent passing of President Russell M. Nelson brings to memory his last conference talk, where he quoted verses from this week’s section: Doctrine and Covenants 121. President Nelson referenced D&C 121:45, where the Lord shares that having confidence “in the presence of God” comes from having charity and virtue. Additionally, we’re told that if we have charity and virtue, we will have a greater understanding of “the doctrine of the priesthood.”

It’s easy to despair when life becomes difficult, but if we heed the words of the prophet and seek charity and virtue, we will overcome all difficulties through our faith: “thine afflictions shall be but a small moment… thou shalt triumph” (D&C 121:7-8).

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

Break the Code

Scripture Study

Complete the Break The Code activity. Then read D&C 121:7-8 together as a family and discuss the principles found in those verses and how they can apply to you. Share some experiences in which you’ve seen Heavenly Father’s hand through a difficult trial. Invite your children to do the same. You could also point out Heavenly Father’s hand in a trial that you’ve gone through as a family.

Making a Difference

Go & Do Activity

Look at a picture of a boat. Point out the small rudder that steers the boat. Read D&C 123:16 and discuss the things taught in that verse. Then, make aluminum foil boats and float them in your bathtub or sink! For added fun, grab a bunch of pennies and see how many each of your boats can hold. Point out that something small, like a penny, can make a big difference, just like the scripture teaches.

Lessons From Liberty Jail

Hands-On Activity

Display the Liberty Jail print as you read D&C 121:1-8, 122:5-9 and 123:17. Discuss how Joseph was feeling. Explain that Christ taught Joseph in Liberty Jail and was with him and the saints in their trials. They were able to rise above the hard times. Point out that this is also true for us in our hard times. Use the Liberty Jail Object Lesson to help your children understand this principle.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities

For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.

Friendship Flower Garden

Hands-On Activity

Look at a picture of a flower garden. Explain that there are many different types of flowers in the garden. Each flower makes the garden more beautiful. Teach that our friendships are like flower gardens. Each friend is different, but each friend makes our lives more beautiful. Explain that Joseph Smith had friends who blessed his life. Read D&C 121:9. Our friendships can bless our lives, too. Point out that Jesus is a friend and He is there for us like our friends. Cut out the friendship garden flowers. Help your child decorate or color each flower. Write a friend’s name on each flower. Tape the flowers to popsicle sticks and place the flowers in a small jar. Share your thoughts about how friends have helped you and made your life more beautiful.

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“A Voice of Gladness for the Living and the Dead”

Even during the early years in Nauvoo, there were times when the Prophet Joseph still had to flee for his life from those who sought to stop the work. Yet even in hiding, he continued to keep his focus on the restoration of the gospel, specifically with baptisms for the dead. “That subject seems to occupy my mind, and press itself upon my feelings the strongest, since I have been pursued by my enemies” (Doctrine and Covenants 128:1). No matter what trials he faced, Joseph never forgot his calling to restore Christ’s Church.

“A House Unto My Name”

Building the city of Nauvoo was not the first time the Saints had to begin again, but it was the first time they could start new from the ground up. As the saints gathered from Missouri to build this new city, many were sick and still reeling from the harsh persecution they had suffered. The Prophet Joseph administered to the saints, healing them both physically and spiritually. Through His Prophet, the Lord promised the saints that, “If ye labor with all your might, I will consecrate that spot that it shall be made holy” (Doctrine and Covenants 124:44)
