Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 32 | August 4-10 | Doctrine and Covenants 85-87

Sometimes, things just don’t work out the way we had planned: dinner gets burnt, the car won’t start, or you unexpectedly get laid off from your job. You’ve been promised blessings for keeping the commandments. It might be tempting to wonder where those blessings are when ill fortune strikes.

Thankfully, we know the Lord’s plan of happiness takes into account both blessings and hardships. No matter what happens at home or out in the world, we can choose to “stand… in holy places” by offering a simple prayer (Doctrine and Covenants 87:8). We can reach out to the Lord in our moment of pain to ask Him to comfort us and to give us the strength to endure. No matter what life’s challenges bring, He will be there for us as we choose to remain unmoved in our faith.

This Come Follow Me FHE lesson includes everything needed for a joyful gospel study with your family! Teach your children to love learning about Jesus Christ with our fun activities and inspiring lessons. Start your free trial now!

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

Break the Code

Scripture Study

It’s time to Break the Code! Complete the puzzle as you read D&C 87:8 as a family and discuss the importance of holy places. Make a list of places that are holy and how holy places can be wherever righteous saints gather. Place the completed puzzle next to a picture of the temple to remind you of holy places all week.

Prophetic Revelation

Go & Do Activity

Years before the American Civil War, Joseph Smith received a revelation of a drawn-out conflict between the U.S. northern and southern states. Section 87 in the Doctrine and Covenants is a testament that prophets receive divine revelation from God. This week’s Go & Do Activity teaches us that latter-day prophets receive similar revelations for our day.

Parable Picture Key

Hands-On Activity

As you read D&C 86:1-7 as a family, use the Parable of the Sower Picture Key as a visual for children to understand the story. After you finish, discuss the symbolism of the wheat and tares. Gather cereal and glue to create your own wheat stalks on the wheat and light activity page. Discuss how you can share your light while completing the craft.

I Can Strengthen My Testimony

Go & Do Activity

Start by discussing why we exercise (to keep our bodies healthy and strong). Read D&C 86:4 and talk about the importance of strengthening our testimonies and making sure they are healthy and strong. Discuss some things you can do to strengthen your testimony. Write down your ideas and put them in a jar or bowl. Pick one out each day this week and do a body exercise and a testimony exercise to make sure that both your bodies and testimonies are getting strong! Play Simon Says (Exercise Version) by saying “Simon Says” and then an exercise move like jumping jacks.

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“I Will Order All Things for Your Good”

Have you ever had a powerful spiritual experience and felt the joy of God’s love, only to feel down again when normal life resumes? Or an hour where your children were seemingly perfect and kind to one another, but the rest of the day was awful? This might have been how the early saints felt by the end of the year following the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Life itself didn’t get easier with the temple’s completion. Financial troubles and increased persecution made enduring to the end difficult for many saints. Yet those who persevered were blessed not only with strength but also with direction on how they could be a blessing to God’s children even amidst their own trials. The Lord’s comforting words to them are extended to us today as we also can help others feel loved during our own struggles: “Let thy heart be of good cheer before my face… for I, the Lord, have a great work for thee to do” (D&C 112:4,6).

“It Is Thy House, a Place of Thy Holiness”

March 27, 1836, was a special date both on earth and in heaven. For the first time since 70 AD, a temple of God was available for men and women to worship in. Many saints who were present for the dedication saw angels celebrating the return of temple blessings to the world. The Lord Jesus Christ shared His own joy of the temple’s completion in Doctrine and Covenants 110:6-7, when he said, “let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, built this house to my name. For behold, I have accepted this house…”.

“The Order of the Son of God”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized according to the Lord’s instructions, as detailed in this week’s reading in the Doctrine and Covenants. One of the ways we can apply the Lord’s guidance in these sections to our families is to establish councils within our homes. We should, with our children, “sit in council with them, and to teach them their duty, edifying one another” (D&C 107:85).
