Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids

Week 3 | January 13 - January 19

The Book of Mormon is full of symbols. This week as you read 1 Nephi 8-10 stop and talk about the symbols that are mentioned. You can use the tree of life symbol page in your materials as a visual resource. If reading all three chapters is not a good option for your family you can use the audio on the Gospel Library app or summarize the story in your own words. The picture in the manual may also help with telling the story.

Use the interactive tree of life scene and people to help the children apply what they’ve learned and visualize themselves holding to the rod of iron.

Another fun idea for this lesson is to make a simple obstacle course and blindfold one person, everyone can take a turn being blindfolded. Secretly choose one person to represent the still small voice. Their job is to talk quietly but walk beside the blindfolded person telling them what steps to take (ex. step to your right then move forward) to help them make it safely to the end of the obstacle course. The one who is blindfolded won’t know who’s voice is assigned to be the Holy Ghost. All other family members can represent the great and spacious building and try to distract or lead the course goer astray. Relate this to the tree of life story.

One of the bonus activities this week is to make fruit necklaces. Use the pear print out in your materials. You can add beads, dry pasta noodles, or fruit loops to your necklaces. Talk about the fruit of the tree of life.

Sing the song “The Iron Rod” as a family. A song chart has been provided to help you learn the song.

In your materials is an instruction page to make your own iron rod. Each member can hold to the rod as you sing the song. Talk about ways you can hold to the rod every day.

“Comfort Ye My People”

There are stages in life that feel like they go on forever, especially in parenthood: sleepless nights helping kids stay in their own beds, potty training for weeks unending, and running to and from after-school activities. While the privilege of being a parent is a blessing, it can be exhausting just trying to keep up every day. Isaiah taught that when we feel like we have nothing left in us, we should rely on the Lord to give us strength (Isiah 40:29). After all, are we not caring for His children?

“A Marvellous Work and a Wonder”

One could look at the work being done by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today and describe it as “marvelous” and a “wonder” (Isaiah 29:14). With temples across the world, missionaries on nearly every continent, and millions of suffering people relieved by Church aid, it truly is impressive. Yet Isaiah marveled not at the Church itself, but at the healing power of Jesus Christ in the hearts of so many of God’s children. It’s not the temples themselves that are a wonder, but the eternal covenants made inside. It’s not the number of missionaries serving that is a marvelous work, but the individual souls who are being taught by each sister and elder. It’s not the exact dollar amount spent on humanitarian efforts that made Isaiah’s vision great, but the difference made in each life through kindness and giving in the Savior’s name.

“God is My Salvation”

Though the writings of Isaiah can be intimidating to study, we are encouraged to dive in and embrace this special part of the Old Testament. Isaiah is unique in that the entire book is written by him, as opposed to the historical texts we read earlier this year. Think about it: the word of the Lord straight from the mouth of an ancient prophet in your own home.
