Change is a difficult process, but one that brings both immediate and eternbal rewards. The people taught by Ammon and his brethren were blessed by change and had their hearts filled with joy as their faith in Christ grew. A key decision in their efforts to change was to lay down their “weapons of… rebellion” (Alma 23:7). Too often we doubt our own role in the Lord’s vineyard, telling ourselves our efforts to reach out to others won’t make a difference, or we’ll just be rejected. Many Nephites told Ammon that his brothers would have no success as missionaries to the Lamanites, but Ammon chose to have faith and go forth serving those he came across. Does it ever seem like you can’t get your kids to be nice to each other? Does doing the same thing over and over not make any difference? Alma found that as prophet, doing the same thing over and over wasn’t helping the people of Zarahemla repent. However, Alma realized that what his people needed wasn’t more lecturing. They needed a “mighty change” of heart (Alma 5: 14) as he did when he was a rebellious youth.

The age of the kings has ended with Mosiah as Alma the Younger becomes the first chief judge of the Nephites. One of Alma the Elder’s most difficult challenges of serving as his people’s prophet was to have his son work against him. Alma the Younger did much to destroy the church, which must have grieved his father. In our day, we are also sometimes too aware of the poor choices made by loved ones.
