Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 37 | September 8-14 | Doctrine and Covenants 97-101

Doctrine and Covenants 97 was given to the saints as both a blessing of comfort and instruction. With persecution growing around them, the saints needed to know the will of the Lord to guide them. Jesus Christ spoke peace to the saints through the Prophet Joseph, encouraging them to wait “patiently on the Lord” and to do what He would do, even if it meant further persecution (D&C 97:2).

The Lord concludes His instruction by commanding the saints to forgive those who offended them, saying, “if he trespass against thee… and repent not, nevertheless thou shalt forgive him” (D&C 97:42). Forgiveness invites us to see things from the Lord’s perspective as we show love as Christ would. When we feel like the world is against us and nothing seems to be working out in our favor, we will be blessed if we follow this same counsel.

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

God Keeps Us Safe

Scripture Study

Read the Parable of the Nobleman and the Olive Trees in D&C 101:43-62 using a felt board and the parable story pictures as you read to help keep your children’s attention. After reading, have a discussion about the parable and how it teaches that following God’s counsel helps keep us safe.

Finding Peace

Hands-On Activity

Before the lesson, prepare books with the “Where Can I Turn For Peace?” finding activity squares. Have everyone think of a time when they wanted to find peace. Follow the instructions from the activity page by listening to the song, then listening again while your children find the picture squares. Discuss what is written on the cards and the meaning of the song. Share how you find peace.

Pure or Hard Hearts

Surprise Activity

Have fun teaching about D&C 100:16 and 101:3-5, 18 with the Chocolate Bar Object Lesson. You will need one chocolate bar, a microwavable bowl, wax paper and toothpicks or popsicle sticks. Learn about pure and hard hearts and how we can allow God to shape us into something better.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities

For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.

Revealing Truth

Hands-On Activity

Hide a toy under a blanket. Have your child feel it and try to guess what’s under the blanket. Pick up the blanket and show the toy. Explain that you revealed the toy. To reveal something is to make something known that wasn’t previously known. With your child, take turns hiding and revealing the toy. Each time you reveal the toy, have them say, “reveal” to help solidify the new word in their minds. Explain that Jesus has revealed many gospel truths. There were truths that were not known; they were hidden because there was a time when there wasn’t a prophet. Through Joseph Smith, Jesus revealed truths like baptism, the temple and the priesthood. When Jesus comes again someday, He will reveal all things, even hidden and precious things. Read D&C 101:32-34 and Article of Faith 1:9. Assemble the flapbook and read it with your child. Share your testimony about all the precious things the Lord has revealed.

“God Meant It unto Good”

Joseph’s forgiveness of his brothers did not come after they had paid restitution or offered an apology. He forgave them the moment he realized they had changed from their jealous ways when they offered themselves in place of Benjamin for punishment. How overwhelming it must have been for Joseph to see such love amongst his brothers. His forgiveness came with no strings attached: “be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves” (Genesis 45:5).

“The Lord Was with Joseph”

In every moment of Joseph’s story, God was with him. From his brothers’ betrayal and serving Potiphar, to a friend of Pharaoh and the savior of his family, at no time was Joseph forgotten by God. Through the good and the bad, he trusted that God knew who he was and had faith that everything would be all right.

“Let God Prevail”

Abraham’s posterity was promised many blessings of eternal significance, but that didn’t mean everything would be perfect. His grandsons, Jacob and Esau, fought over who should inherit their father’s birthright. Relatives lied to and tricked each other. The prophet’s very own family was dysfunctional, yet that didn’t stop those who were righteous from striving to follow Jesus Christ.
