Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 51 | December 15-21 | The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Every family comes with their own set of trials and blessings. Parents and children alike have both memorable times together, as well as times in which forgiveness is needed to move forward in love and harmony. As the Proclamation teaches, Jesus Christ is the key to strengthening bonds and repairing relationships that break: “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Ultimately, all we do as a family in righteousness prepares us to live with God, exalted, as a family in heaven.

Serving Your Family

Go & Do Activity

Read paragraph six of The Family Proclamation. Talk about how one of the responsibilities of parents is to teach their children “to love and serve one another.” Discuss ways you can be more loving and serve each other. This is a good reminder to love and serve each other, not just this week, but always. Do a quick service activity to show your love for your family.

Happy Family

Hands-On Activity

Begin by singing the song “Happy Family,” on page 198a of the Children’s Songbook. Use the Happy Family Stick Puppets to hold up as you sing (cut out and tape a popsicle stick to the back). Discuss the qualities each member of your family contributes to your family and how each person is important. Finish by playing Family BINGO.

I Can Have a Happy Family

Hands-On Activity

Begin by singing “Families Can Be Together Forever” (Children’s Songbook, pg. 188). Talk about how we can be together with our family forever. Heavenly Father wants us to have happy families now and forever. Read the following quote: from The Proclamation: “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.” Teach that Heavenly Father has told us the things we can do to have a happy family. Use the happy family sticker chart and plan things you can do this week to accomplish each task that can help your family be happy. Put a sticker in the box after you complete each activity. At the end of the week, talk about how your family feels after doing the things Heavenly Father has told us helps our families be happy.

“The Lord Looketh on the Heart”

Have you ever been jealous of your neighbor? The Israelites sure were. They wanted a king to rule over them as other nations had, believing that life would be better and more secure. However, when Israel’s prophet prayed about having a king as a leader, the Lord responded that the people’s jealous desire was actually a rejection of Him as their true King: “they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them” (1 Samuel 8:7). Their need for what others’ possessed had decreased their faith in Him.

“My Heart Rejoiceth in the Lord”

The Lord loved His people, the children of Israel. We read in Ruth that His love wasn’t just for the nation as a whole, but for each person individually who kept their covenants. Ruth is an example of a convert to the faith who trusted in the Lord to keep her and her mother-in-law safe during a famine. Ruth’s loyalty to God helped her see His blessings in her life and trust that even in an uncertain world, good things would come.

“The Lord Raised Up a Deliverer”

What does the perfect parent look like? Is it someone who never yells? Who is always present with their children? Maybe it’s someone who cooks food that the kids never complain about. The Book of Judges teaches us that even with specific rules and expectations, the children of Israel had a habit of returning to sin and idolatry time and time again. Even after they sinned or complained yet again, the Lord always invited them to start new and return to Him.
