After many years of living separately, King Hezekiah of Judah invited the people of the Kingdom of Israel to come down to Jerusalem and worship the Lord during the Passover. Many who came to the temple did not remember all the cleansing ordinances and were not fully prepared to participate. Rather than scorn them, Hezekiah made sure that no one who attended Passover was left out: “The good Lord pardon every one that prepareth his heart to seek God” (2 Chronicles 30:18-19). Josiah was a righteous king of Judah. He desired to bring the people back into their covenant relationship with the Lord, yet there was no way to remember the Law of Moses: the people had forgotten it. However, when ancient scripture texts were found in the temple, Josiah was able to remind his people of the law and blessings of their covenant. The people began to feel God’s presence again as worship of the Savior resumed “with all their heart and all their soul” (2 Kings 23:3).
