Introduction to the Old Testament

Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids

Week 1 | December 29 - January 4 | The First Testament of Jesus Christ

Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 1 | December 29-January 4 | The First Testament of Jesus Christ

The Old Testament contains the earliest records of the prophets. Through their words, we learn of Jesus Christ’s role in creating the world and His purpose in doing so. We discover how faith in Christ, obedience, sacrifice, and love help us endure all things.

We can prepare our children to make covenants with God at baptism and in the temple through family study of the Old Testament. As we read of God’s covenant people and their relationship with Jehovah (Jesus Christ), we can help our children to know that He will always be there to lead and guide them through life’s difficulties and inevitably back into the presence of our Father in Heaven.

Come Follow Me FHE lessons include everything you need to make gospel study fun for your family! Empower your children to love the gospel with our scripture-focused lesson activities. Start your free trial now!

What is the Old Testament?

Hands-On Activity

Before starting your lesson, wrap a Bible like a gift. Begin your lesson by gathering your children and showing them the gift. Say, “God has given us a gift that we can use every day, and I have it here. Before we open it, everyone gets to guess what this gift is.” Allow your children to guess and praise each effort. Then, invite them to open the gift together and reveal what’s inside—it’s the Bible! Explain that this is a book of scriptures that Heavenly Father has given us. See the lesson for additional details.

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“Our Eyes Are upon Thee”

After many years of living separately, King Hezekiah of Judah invited the people of the Kingdom of Israel to come down to Jerusalem and worship the Lord during the Passover. Many who came to the temple did not remember all the cleansing ordinances and were not fully prepared to participate. Rather than scorn them, Hezekiah made sure that no one who attended Passover was left out: “The good Lord pardon every one that prepareth his heart to seek God” (2 Chronicles 30:18-19). Because of this, “there was great joy” during the Passover in Jerusalem as the people grew closer together in worship (2 Chronicles 30:26).

“He Trusted in the Lord God of Israel”

Josiah was a righteous king of Judah. He desired to bring the people back into their covenant relationship with the Lord, yet there was no way to remember the Law of Moses: the people had forgotten it. However, when ancient scripture texts were found in the temple, Josiah was able to remind his people of the law and blessings of their covenant. The people began to feel God’s presence again as worship of the Savior resumed “with all their heart and all their soul” (2 Kings 23:3).

“There Is a Prophet in Israel”

Miracles are a must-have in parenting. From remembering to take a few breaths when we discover marker all over the couch, to pleading for the health of our little ones when they’re sick, we need miracles every day. The stories of Elisha the Prophet remind us that the Lord is aware of the parent and their child at all times.
