Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 24 | June 8-14 | 1 Samuel 8–10; 13; 15–16

Have you ever been jealous of your neighbor? The Israelites sure were. They wanted a king to rule over them as other nations had, believing that life would be better and more secure. However, when Israel’s prophet prayed about having a king as a leader, the Lord responded that the people’s jealous desire was actually a rejection of Him as their true King: “they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them” (1 Samuel 8:7). Their need for what others’ possessed had decreased their faith in Him.
When we wish we could be living as others do, we forget what the Lord has done for us. There are real miracles in our lives every day. It’s up to us as parents to teach our children how to see them, but how can we do that if we ourselves are too busy looking over the fence at the neighbor’s house? Or their car? Or salary? Or yet another cruise? If we instead choose faith, we can obtain what the Lord truly wants for His people: humility, gratitude, and lasting joy.

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS
Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities
We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!
Passage to Ponder
Scripture Study
Study 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and memorize 1 Samuel 16:6-7 as this week’s Passage to Ponder. After reading the scripture, discuss what qualities your family would look for if you were choosing a king. What qualities do you think would be important? Explain how the Lord knows each of us individually and looks upon our hearts. We can trust that He is aware of us and our needs and is using people from all walks of life to build His kingdom.

Callings From God
Hands-On Activity
Choosing Saul and David to be kings helps us understand how people are called to serve in different roles in the Church. Talk with your family about how each calling comes from God. Read or summarize the following scriptures together: 1 Samuel 8:6; 9:15–17; 10:1–24; and 16:1–13. Discuss a calling in your ward that blesses your life, and write a thank-you note to that person. Then, play the Callings Guess Who! game.

Look Upon the Heart
Coloring Activity
Talk with your child about ways we sometimes judge others based on their outward appearance. Help them understand that each of us has unique qualities that make us special. Read 1 Samuel 16:7 together. The Lord looks on the heart, not just what’s on the outside. As you color “The Lord Looketh on the Heart” coloring page, discuss how we can try to see others as God does—looking at their true intentions and character. Seeing others this way can bless our relationships and help us be more loving and kind.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities
For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.
Gather Acts of Kindness
Family Activity
Help your child understand that obeying God’s commandments brings blessings. Bring your child near the kitchen stove and say, “I don’t want you to touch it because it gets very hot. And when something is very hot, it can burn you.” Then explain, “We have rules in our home to keep us safe. In the same way, God gives us commandments to help us feel peace and stay safe.” Teach your child about Saul. When Saul was king, he didn’t obey God. He went to fight an army that was bigger and stronger than his own. Saul thought that offering a gift to God would help them win the battle. But God didn’t want sacrifices—He wanted obedience. Read 1 Samuel 13:13–14 aloud. Explain that because Saul chose to disobey, God decided to choose a new king. Teach: “When we choose to obey God’s commandments instead of following our own wants or ideas, we are blessed.” Sing “Keep the Commandments” with your child. Each time you repeat the song, give your child a command to follow so they can practice obedience in a fun way!
