Job had many blessings in his life: a large family, a devoted spouse, and wealth that provided plenty and more for his household. Job gave thanks to God for his blessings, but even when nearly every blessing was taken away, he did not lessen his faith. Instead, as those around him said his faith had been a waste of time, Job showed his trust in the Lord by exercising Christlike patience and long suffering. Eventually, Job’s faith was rewarded, and his trust in God was justified.

Few among us will feel as Job did, but we can still feel as though life is unfair at times: families outgrow homes but can’t afford more room; the car never seems to not have problems; a quiet summer at home when everyone else is going on fun vacations. If any of these “unfair” situations sound familiar, trust as Job did in the Lord. None of these are punishments for disobedience. They can be opportunities to exercise faith and draw nearer to Him. Our example, in doing so, is one of the greatest blessings we can give our children.

Faith Like Job

Scripture Study

With your family, cut out, glue, and fold the accordion-style Story of Job. Then read the story together (Job 1:1–19; 2:7–9; 3:1–11; 38–42). Talk with your children about what faith is and how Job showed his faith. Afterward, enjoy a treat by making Faith Pudding Cups. As you eat, ask your children how faith is like a seed. Discuss ways they can develop strong faith like Job.

Uplift and Encourage

Hands-On Activity

Read Job 19:13–19 together as a family. Talk about what Job’s friends were like and how they treated him. Explain that good friends uplift and encourage one another. Share examples of good friends you’ve had, and ask your children what they think makes a good friend. Then, as a family, use the Good Friends Uplift & Encourage Us treat tags to do a fun “treat drop” and show appreciation for the friends who have blessed your lives.

Be A Good Friend

Family Activity

Ask your child to name some of their friends. Discuss the good qualities of these friends and share activities they enjoy doing together. Explain that good friends can help us when we’re having a hard day. Job, however, didn’t have friends who helped and comforted him. Refer to Job 16:1-5. Talk about ways we can be good friends by showing kind-ness and offering help when our friends are having a tough time. Sing “Friends Are Fun” (Children’s Songbook, p. 74). With your child, make a small treat for a friend. Attach a friendship tag (found in the Elementary Bundle) and deliver the treat. Share your testimony about how good friends have helped you through difficult times.
