Esther never set out to be queen of the most powerful empire in the world. Born into servitude as part of a conquered people, the best life Esther could have hoped for would have been a quiet life far away from the homeland of her ancestors. Yet when trouble came, it wasn’t her beauty or good luck that saved her people’s lives; it was her faith in God. Through her trust in the Lord and her willingness to act in faith, Esther was able to accomplish much more than she could alone.

We can learn so much from Esther’s life. We should have faith as she did that if we are brave and move forward in the service of God, He will make the most of our efforts. We can be a blessing to those around us by serving them. As President Spencer W. Kimball said, “God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs.” Just as Esther was chosen to meet the needs of her people, we can be the Lord’s hands in answering the prayers of those around us.

Think Fast

Scripture Study

Esther and the Jews were in a time of need, so they began to fast and pray to the Lord. Spiritual blessings come when we rely on the Lord through fasting and prayer. Read and study Esther 4:1-3, 10-17. What did they fast for? Think of things you and your family can fast for. Are there reasons in your life, or someone else’s, where you might need special help from the Lord? Teach your children the FAST acronym, and then play the Think FAST card game.

Esther Crowns

Hands-On Activity

Teach your family the story of Esther. Read Esther 4:15-16 to learn about her courage. Then, make and decorate Esther Crowns to remind you that with the Lord’s help, you can be brave, too!

Esther’s Example

Surprise Activity

Print the Story of Esther for Kids on the back of the Esther poster so you can hold up the picture and teach the story of Esther from Esther 1-8. After sharing the story, tape the Esther picture to the wall. Next, cut out the star traits and attach them around her picture. Write the traits Esther exemplified on the blank stars. Discuss these qualities with your family. Esther is a great example, and we can choose to be like her! Choose one trait to work on this week and make plans to reflect on your progress.

We Can Do Brave Things

Family Activity

Tell your child how Esther was afraid to go before the king. She asked the people around her to pray and fast with her. Esther prayed and fasted for help from Heavenly Father so she could be brave and protect her people. Heavenly Father blessed her with courage. She went before the king, and he listened to her. Esther saved her people from being killed. Ask your child to share a time when they felt afraid. Remind them that when we are scared, we can pray for help from Heavenly Father. We can also ask others to pray and support us. With your child, retell the story of Esther going before the king using the Queen Esther and King paper dolls. Share your testimony that Heavenly Father answers prayers and helps us do brave things.
