In modern times, the Lord declared “the song of the heart is a prayer unto me” (Doctrine and Covenants 25:12). In ancient times, songs, or psalms, were used to praise the Lord and remember His covenants with His people. Many Psalms are attributed to King David, whose relationship with God is one of the most detailed in the entire Old Testament. It’s no wonder David is thought to be the author of so many songs that praise the Lord for His strength, His mercy, His patience with His children, and His eternal love for all mankind.

Music can be a special way to help children understand God’s love for them. As parents, we should fill our homes with the light of Christ, including the light which comes from uplifting experiences with song and dance. Consider how you can share your love for God with your children through music, as David did.

Scripture Study

It’s time to Break the Code and discover what this ancient scripture mystery says! Solve the puzzle, then open your Bible to Psalm 28:7 to check your answer. Share your testimony of how the Lord is your “strength and shield.” Connect this message to the coloring page and the phrase “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Draw comparisons between the two.

Ups and Downs

Hands-On Activity

Life is full of ups and downs—of happiness and sadness, of righteousness and sin. Read Psalm 24:3–4 and focus on the phrase “clean hands and a pure heart.” Having a pure heart and turning to the Lord in every thought, word, and deed helps us draw closer to Him. Make homemade playdough (or use store-bought) to create heart and hand shapes. As you do, talk about how you can use your heart and hands to come closer to Christ this week.

The Lord is Our Shepherd

Coloring Page

As a family, read Psalm 23 and ask your children, “What is a shepherd?” Talk about shepherds in the Bible and how their main role was to protect and care for their sheep. Explain that the Lord is our Shepherd—He protects, leads, and guides us each day. Before the lesson, print photos of your children to attach to the coloring page. Display “The Lord Is My Shepherd” page in their bed-rooms so they can see it daily and remember the comforting truth: “The Lord is my Shepherd”.

Lead Me, Guide Me

Family Activity

Set up an obstacle course in a room in your home using chairs. Explain to your child that you want to walk to the other side of the room, but you will be blind-ed and won’t be able to see where you need to go. Put on the blindfold and ask your child to take your hand and lead you through the obstacle course. When you reach the end, teach that life may sometimes feel like an obstacle course, where we don’t always know which way to go. But Jesus will take us by the hand and help us through. Read Psalm 25:5 together. Then, let your child have a turn walking through the obstacle course while wearing the blindfold. Guide them through the course by taking their hand. Sing “I Am a Child of God” (Children’s Songbook, p. 2). Share your testimony that Jesus will always lead and guide us through life.
