Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 42 | October 12-18 | Isaiah 58–66

Isaiah taught more about the principle of fasting than any other Old Testament prophet, teaching that giving something up for the Lord is more than just going without food and drink. Its purpose is much holier: “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free” (Isaiah 58:6). Fasting frees us from constraints on our spirit, allowing us to be more sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Fasting can bless our families when we look at other things we can sacrifice. For example, a day without social media can help us be more attentive to our children’s spiritual needs or help us appreciate simple blessings. We welcome light into our lives each time we fast and can feel more confident that we are on the right path, for “the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought” (Isaiah 58:11).

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

We have some great activities and resources to help assist you in celebrating a Christ-centered Easter this year! We recommend picking the activities that work best for you and your family. We think just a few activities will allow you to celebrate Easter, but also allow you time to focus on our Savior and what He has done for us. Our hope is that you will find something meaningful for your family to help celebrate this special holiday!

Prepare for the Sabbath

Hands-On Activity

Elder Quentin L. Cook taught, “…keeping the Sabbath day holy is a refuge from the storms of life…”. Read Isaiah 58:13–14 together and share experiences and

ideas about how to prepare for Sunday. Create your Sabbath Day Mobile and hang it where you can see it often, as a reminder to do chores, activities, and other preparations on Saturday to honor the Sabbath day.

All Our Sins and Sorrows

Surprise Activity

As you read Isaiah 60:1–3, ask your children to listen for the word “light.” Give them small flashlights, and read the verses again—letting them turn their flashlights on when they hear “light” and off when they hear “darkness.” Make the Campfire Handprint craft and discuss how fire and light are symbols of Jesus Christ.

Saturday Song

Coloring Page

Sunday is a very special day for members of the Church. We strive to keep Sunday, or the Sabbath Day, holy. Discuss how we have six days each week to work, clean, and prepare so we can worship and rest on the Sabbath. Make a list of ways you can help one another this week to prepare for a peaceful and smooth Sabbath. After coloring the “Saturday Song” coloring page, hang it up as a reminder to work together on your goal.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities

For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.

I Will Shine

Family Activity

Hang a picture of Jesus on the wall and turn off the lights in the room. Give your child a battery-operated tea light to hold. Explain that even though the light is small, it still helps others see in the dark. Invite your child to hold their light up to Jesus. Share your testimony that Jesus is the “Light of the World,” and we can share His light with others. Read Isaiah 60:1 aloud. Explain that when we are kind, helpful, or share the gospel with others, we are shining His light. Teach that your child can shine His light to everyone around them. End by singing “I Will Shine” together. Share your testimony that we can shine the light of Jesus by sharing His love with others.

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“He Hath Borne Our Griefs, and Carried Our Sorrows”

Some of Isaiah’s greatest teachings were his reminders that the Lord loves His people. Though they stumbled over their own mistakes constantly, the Lord never stopped repeating His love for them and His willingness to forgive them, for He is “thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people” (Isaiah 51:22).

“Comfort Ye My People”

There are stages in life that feel like they go on forever, especially in parenthood: sleepless nights helping kids stay in their own beds, potty training for weeks unending, and running to and from after-school activities. While the privilege of being a parent is a blessing, it can be exhausting just trying to keep up every day. Isaiah taught that when we feel like we have nothing left in us, we should rely on the Lord to give us strength (Isiah 40:29). After all, are we not caring for His children?
