Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 2 | January 6 – 12 | Doctrine and Covenants 1

The Prophet Joseph was 26 years old when he received the revelation that became the first section of the Doctrine and Covenants. This section serves as an introduction to the sacred record of the Latter-Days and is filled with wisdom from on high.

As the Savior Jesus Christ opened the heavens to the early Saints, He included revelations that would impact “the inhabitants of all the earth” (D&C 1:8). One of these key principles is that when the word of the Lord is spoken, “whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same” (D&C 1:38).

Scripture Fill-in-the-Blank

Scripture Study

Go on a scripture scavenger hunt! Hide words from D&C 1:30 around your house. Search for words and complete the Scripture Fill-in-the-Blank. Read it out loud and post the verse somewhere you will see it every day this week. Bonus: try to memorize the verse as a family!

Follow the Prophet Go Fish

Surprise Activity

Brainstorm things the prophet has asked us to do. Reference D&C 1:37-38 and point out how when the prophet speaks to us, it is as if the Lord is speaking. Play Follow the Prophet Go Fish as a family and challenge yourselves to keep these commandments throughout the year.

A Repentant Heart

Coloring Page

Learn the steps to having a repentant heart. Read D&C 1:32, and learn how all mistakes can be forgiven and hearts healed through the power of repentance. You can even cut out the band-aids and place them over the heart on your Repentant Heart coloring page as you discuss the steps.

Toddler Bundle Lessons & Activities

For kids ages 1-4 at home and in nursery or sunbeams.

This week, we’ll be sharing the gospel with your little ones using the activity book in the Elementary Bundle. Be sure to use the activity book for younger children (Level 1, Recommended for ages 3-6). Print your activity book pages, then cut all of them in half, except the cover. You will fold the cover in half to help keep the pages together. Put all your pages in order inside the cover and then staple along the left-hand edge. Make one book for each of your children.

Searching the Scriptures

Hands-On Activity

Tell your child to listen for the mystery word “SEARCH.” Instruct them that when they hear it to put their finger on their nose. Read D&C 1:37. Ask your child if they have ever searched for something. How did they feel when they found it? Show your child the scriptures and tell them that the scriptures have the word of God and they teach us about ways that we can be happy because God wants us to be happy. Explain that you are going to search for things in the scriptures that can bring happiness. Cut and color the magnifying glass and the pictures of Jesus Christ, the scriptures, the family, the church and the smiley faces, or use the colored version. Optional: tape plastic wrap inside the magnifying glass. Hide the pictures around the house and use the magnifying glass to search for the pictures. Explain that when we search the scriptures we can be happy just like we are happy when we find something we are looking for!

The toddler bundle includes a lesson plan and three activities every week. Grab the toddler bundle in our subscription.

“I Am with the Faithful Always”

It’s easy to wish the Lord would show us everything we need to do to be happy and successful. However, that’s not His way. Instead, we are to act under His guidance and do the things we feel would bring to pass righteousness. As He tells the saints in Doctrine and Covenants 62, do that “as seemeth you good, it mattereth not unto me; only be faithful.”

“Anxiously Engaged in a Good Cause”

We all want to arrive at our own “promised land” or “Zion” sooner rather than later. However, we cannot forget that the process of getting there is just as important as the destination itself. As we follow Jesus Christ and keep His commandments, we are changed to become more like the Savior. The trials that accompany this period of growth are essential the eternal reward of being with our families forever, for “after much tribulation come the blessings (DC 58:4).”

“A Faithful, a Just, and a Wise Steward”

In a world that revolves around money, it can be stressful to know how we can support our families and make the most of the resources we obtain. We should feel grateful to know that in the Lord’s Church, Jesus Christ provides direction on how temporal resources can be used to further His work. He instructs the saints in Doctrine and Covenants 51 to collect money, food, and clothing to help provide for each other. We also read of the commandment to build a bishop’s storehouse.
